Indoor Skatepark Refurbishment

Concrete Waves Skateboard facility in Newquay.

VIY and Skateboard GB

The skatepark refurbishment project is a partnership between Skateboard GB and VIY (Volunteer It Yourself) which combines volunteering and DIY by challenging young people aged 14-24 to learn trade and building skills, on the job, by committing to help fix local youth and community facilities in need of essential repairs or improvement.

VIY are supported by Sport England to offer renovation and refurbishment project to 200+ sports clubs / skateparks, organisations and spaces that host physical activity between 2020-2023. These projects will also be supported by VIY’s trade and construction sector partners through the donation of building materials and the recruitment of professional tradespeople as skills mentors for young people and to help undertake the building works required on each project.

VIY and LS-Ten Skatepark

VIY’s very first skatepark project took place in March and April 2021 at LS-Ten Skate Park in Leeds, a charity aiming to create a safe, engaging and inclusive environment, raising aspirations and reducing inequality through wheeled sports and education.

A great planning document for Councils, Local Authorities, Community Groups, Charities and individuals planning to build a skatepark or skateboarding facility.

We partnered with Monolith, team of specialist skatepark builders led by George Eccleston, to completely rebuild a large section of LS-Ten’s indoor skate ramp area over a four week period. In that time, the area went from bare concrete to a brand new street course with a variety of ramps and features to cater for LS-Ten’s mix of users: a multi-use area.

VIY and FLO Skatepark
VIY and Skateboard GB have teamed up with Persimmon Homes, Sport England and Travis Perkins on the second indoor skatepark redevelopment project.

FLO Skatepark will receive a £75K remodel next month, with the entire street course being re-developed. The works will be led by VIY and 414 Skateparks and will see 30 young people take ownership of the project and with the support of trade mentors, gaining City and Guilds trade qualifications.

FLO Skatepark is the home to Alex Halford, a professional skateboard and a member of the Skateboard GB aspiration team. The works at the venue would see vast improvements allowing for local skateboarders to follow in the footsteps of Alex or simply have a good facility to skate at in Nottingham.
